Libya's outgoing National Transitional Council (NTC) officially handed over power to the newly-elected assembly on 8 August after a ceremony in Tripoli.
The new 200-seat body voted in a veteran Gaddafi opponent, Mohamed Magarief, as its first speaker. Magarief had previously been head of the National Front for the Salvation of Libya, whose political party won three seats in last month's elections.
Giuma Attiga, from Misrata, and Saleh Essaleh, from the Wadi al-Shatti region in southern Libya, won the votes to become vice-speakers.
The new congress plans to sit again on 23 August and is expected to name a Prime Minister and a cabinet in the first half of September.
